| Abstract: | In machine translation systems, the problem of computing social status of individuals from the text in the source language that doesn't have elaborate honorification system, and using this information to generate text in target language having elaborate honorification system is non-trivial. In this paper, we present techniques to compute social status of the individuals in English source text and encode it in the parse tree. The social status is divided into different levels according to Nepali language honorification system so that proper Nepali honorific morphemes can be directly generated from the parse tree. The technique can be extended to handle honorification in machine translation from English to other languages with honorification system similar to Nepali. | |
