Abstract:In this paper medical image compression using statistical coding techniques is discussed and a comparative study has been performed. Statistical coding algorithms choosen are Huffman Coding and Arithmetic Coding. To illustrate the effectiveness of the two statistical methods, several medical images have been considered. The medical images Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI), Computer Tomography (CT), Ultrasound, and X-ray are compressed and decompressed by adopting the above two techniques. It is generally noticed that the Arithmetic coding technique is better in speed. Huffman coding is better in compression rate when the image size is lesser than 1MB. Arithmetic coding is better both in speed and compression rate when the image size is greater than or equal to 1MB.
