Abstract:In modern cities, tall buildings are now looked upon in terms of their sustainability. Efficient use of energy in buildings, either in daily operation or as embodied energy in materials, is an important consideration of sustainability. While energy efficient devices are increasingly used in building services systems, an integrated approach should be adopted to achieve an overall reduction in energy consumption. With Hong Kong importing all its materials and fuels from abroad, energy efficiency could bring about benefits to the local economy and help to ease the environmental burden on the producer countries. There should also be greater efforts in exploring alternative renewable energy sources and in promoting energy efficiency.
