Abstract:The scope of this paper is to show the results obtained for simulated 3D plunging breaking waves by solving the Navier-Stokes equations in air and water, coupled with a subgrid scale turbulence model (Large Eddy Simulation – LES). The breaking processes including overturning and splash-up occurrence, breaking induced vortex-like motion beneath the surface and air entrainment are presented and discussed. We will focus on showing the improvements brought by Large Eddy Simulation.
