Abstract:A first version of a numerical wave data-base along the French Atlantic coasts, the English Channel and the North Sea has been built by hindcasting sea-state conditions over a period of 25 years (1979-2003) with the TOMAWAC wave model. Two sources of wind-data have been considered and two nested grids have been used, in order to reach a resolution of about 3 km along the coasts. The results of the various runs are analysed and discussed, by comparing models' results with buoy data over a period of 2 years (1999 and 2000). From the first version of the data-base statistical analyses are performed in order to build synthetic charts showing average values of the wave climate, as well as wave heights which are exceeded 10 % or 1 % of time. Finally a preliminary estimation of extreme wave heights is tentatively obtained for the coarser model.
