| Abstract: | Measurements at the Petten Sea Defense have been used to investigate the reliability of SWAN and the RAND2001 database, which consists of extreme wave conditions obtained with the spectral wave model SWAN for the Dutch coast, the Wadden Sea and Westerschelde. Four sets of hindcasts of recent storms have been performed consisting of all combinations of two SWAN model versions (30.62 and 40.16) and two hindcast methodologies, a relatively simple standard approach and an advanced approach. In total 21 storm events from 4 storm periods were hindcast. The results were statistically analyzed to quantify the reliability of SWAN and the contents of the database RAND2001. The results indicate that the contents of the database RAND2001 is not necessarily reliable, that the advanced hindcast approach improves the overall results considerably, and that the performance of the two SWAN versions is similar. | |
