| Abstract: | An optical technique for estimation of wave directional spectra seaward of the surf zone is discussed and tested against in situ PUV data collected during the NCEX field experiment. Based on three example data runs, estimates of the location of the incident spectral peak agree between the two systems to a few degrees in direction and better than 0.01 Hz in frequency. Optical techniques are usually dominated by high frequency waves that are spatially aliased and contribute to a noise floor in directional spectral estimation. However, optical techniques are logistically quite simple and potentially can yield high-resolution results over a large area. |
