| Abstract: | The sodium-calcium exchanger increases intracellular calcium when it operates in reverse mode. In pathological conditions with elevated sodium this calcium source might contribute sufficiently to facilitate contraction. We propose a mathematical model where the spatial and temporal distribution of sodium and calcium is taken into account. Important channels are represented as spatially discrete entities. Under certain conditions we observe in the model that release from SR can be triggered by sodium influx and thus advanced in time. However, the present results are preliminary and in order to draw quantitative conclusions several modeling uncertainties must be clarified. | |
