| Abstract: | Bubble velocity and turbulence intensity in the aerated region of a plunging breaker generated in a two-dimensional wave tank were investigated using a novel measurement technique - bubble image velocimetry (BIV). The mean velocity was calculated from ensemble averaging 20 instantaneous velocity fields. It was found that the maximum velocities right before and right after the first wave impinging are 1.89 m/s (1.46C) and 2.12 m/s (1.63C), respectively, with C being the phase speed. The maximum turbulence intensity is around 0.85 m/s that is approximately 45% of the maximum velocity. |
