| Abstract: | The intent of this paper is to investigate the efficacy of visual observations as a means to obtain engineering accurate information in the surf zone. This paper analyzes a data set of visual observations in the surf zone by comparison with numerical predictions of the same waves. Comparison of wave period histograms indicates generally good agreement. Comparison of wave direction histograms indicates generally poor agreement. After appropriate transformation of the numerical predictions, comparison and analysis of wave height histograms indicate generally good agreement. The results further indicate the visual observer is estimating the H10 wave heights in the surf zone. Human nature introduces some influences on the visual observations. |
