Abstract:We describe a comprehensive field experiment conducted on the muddy shelf fronting Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana, in the vicinity of the subaqueous Atchafalaya River delta. In early spring, cold fronts pass over the experiment site with a periodicity of roughly two weeks. The rains, river floods and wave fields associated with the fronts produce episodic resuspension events which in turn affect significantly wave propagation (enhance wave dissipation). The experiment represents the first successful attempt to collect high-resolution coherent observations of wave and sediment dynamics in a cohesive sedimentary environment.
