Abstract:We have modified a fully 3D, volume of fluid model, entitled TRUCHAS, to examine air-sea interactions, with particular emphasis on the deep-water realm. The ability of TRUCHAS to model multiple fluids within the same computational domain allows for a more detailed analysis of wave-breaking events. Validation of the model's predictive capabilities is accomplished through correlation with data from laboratory experiments conducted at the University of Miami's Air-Sea Interaction Salt-Water Tank (ASIST), possessing both wind and wave generating capabilities. Model results have shown good comparison with measured laboratory data for such experiments. Future work with this model will include a more comprehensive examination of the transfer of momentum from air to sea during a breaking episode, as well as in-depth studies of the generation and development of wind-waves and a detailed analysis of the impact of wave forcing on bridge deck structures.
