Abstract:To overcome the scarcity or the absence of observed wave data in the vicinity of a site where coastal protection works or maritime structures have to be built, two different methodologies, TRANSFER and MAR3G, are presented, applied and compared in this paper. These methodologies were applied in the definition of the wave regimes, a set of subclimates of the wave climate, at four selected sites along the Portuguese coast. The results are compared in terms of the joint histograms of wave heights, wave periods and wave directions for both methodologies. Statistical values associated with the above variables are also calculated and compared. Finally, the main advantages and disadvantages of using each of the considered methodologies are discussed.
